So why did I help Daics get on to Twitter? Well he is currently promoting his SportZstats counters. I explained that he could build a following through his AFL fan base and via his work on SEN to help drive traffic for his SportZstats business.

Now he is new to Twitter but is loving the interaction that Twitter is providing him with sports fans. One of our first issues was making sure that people believed it was him and not a fake account. One non-believer was local Melbourne radio funny man Dave Hughes at @DHughesy. Here’s how we got Hughesy to believe…

Just a quick update on what’s happening on SeanCallanan.com as I have been in “thinking-mode” on what exactly I want from this site for myself and for my readers/clients/friends.

I have been reading Guy Kawasaki’s book called Reality Check which is a great read on marketing and competing in a startup world. After working in the tech startup world I know that how a product is marketed and released is just as important if not more than the technical gadgetry that is behind it.

I have found my “professional sabbatical” to be very benefitial to me to find out how other people go about their business and how different fields engage in their business. Networking has been the biggest win especially via Twitter (@seancallanan) I have been able to connect with some very savvy people. Our sports show, SportzfanRadio is a humble left-of-field radio sports show on 88.3FM Southern FM now has regular listeners and interaction via the @SportzfanRadio tweets.

Twitter works very effectively when it is used as a conversational platform, it is not a broadcast platform which is where some celebrity tweeps do #FAIL. Twitter can become a very powerful platform to engage with your fans, that is where successful businesses especially in sports will gain terrific value.

Firstly a disclaimer I am a huge Jerry Seinfeld fan, he is one of the reasons Bunny & I hit it off. Nothing like a huge Elaine Benes “Get Out” chest shove while you are chatting up a good looking girl.

Anyway back to the title. Why should Jerry Seinfeld join Twitter? He has a standup bit where he comments as only he can that it was so much easier to make friends when you are a little kid. You walked into a playground stood next to another kid and asked, “Wanna be friends?” “Okay” was the standard reply.

It can be hard meeting new friends when you are an adult but not impossible. As Jerry points out (in a funnier way than I can) there are so many rules when we are adults. Twitter is fun as so many of these rules are broken or non-existent on Twitter.

Imagine chirping in on a conversation you are not involved in because you have something funny, interesting or weird to say. Not on your life! On Twitter it is a regular and welcomed occurrence.

As a conversational platform people who “get” Twitter are talkers, listeners & networkers. It is amazing the people you run into as you follow. Twitterers set themselves apart from the “web chat stereotypes” who never venture away of their darkened computer desks. Tweetups are meetings of fellow twitterers like the Twitter universe it is a diverse group of interesting people. I recently attended the #melbtweetup, it was one of the most social user group/techy based group I’ve been to.

I spoke at Bunny’s funeral about how amazing she was at connecting with people without the use of Twitter. I think Twitter may (I stress may) have dragged her away from ebay. I can only hope to connect with my family, friends and colleagues as much as she did but using Twitter is giving me a great leg up to do that.

For my friends who have not caught the Twitter bug I will be in touch to get you tweeting. Jerry you should too, who knows you may find a new friend, I know you’ll get a follow from me. @seancallanan on Twitter.

I have Retweeted this post on HowIsBunny.com

I don’t know how many readers there are of this “my technical blog” when I started it I made a conscious decision to keep the technical and personal separate. I don’t know why but I guess it was just a privacy thing, but things have changed.

The past 2 months have been a rollercoaster of emotions, I lost the love of my life Bunny, Michelle Callanan, on the 26th December 2008. One of the biggest supports I had and continue to have is through HowIsBunny.com. To blog without any filter continues to lift weight off my shoulders, it’s not the same as a hug from my kids but it does help.

How does this relate to this “my technical blog”? Well for one I will just blog what is happening, what I am doing and where I am going. Hopefully some of you are headed in similar directions or face similar problems that I can help solve. What you will see is more of me as my Twitter bio points out “Husband, Dad, Sports fan, Geek, in that order…” that hasn’t changed and it describes me well.

So 2009 looms as a large year but I am sure by the end of it I will be able to count many successes that Devtest can achieve. Just looking at the projects we are working on now:

supplying the technical smarts behind an exciting web project based out of Seattle with IamSaintValentino.com

developing one of the most comprehensive child online protection systems ChatAlert soon to be in Beta

testing out the latest Microsoft offerings to see which ones provide the most advantage to us and our clients

even applying the Devtest successful processes to developing for the iPhone market, keep an eye on the App Store for a release soon!

My goal this year is to further develop the Devtest Melbourne office into one of the finest development shops this side of Redmond.

If we can help you with development, testing, project management, infrastructure then please give me a call on 0407 047 200 or email me seanc AT devtest.com
