My sports background revolves around the work I have done as a partner of Sportzfan Data.
Our partnership's current focus is Sportzfan Radio heard each week Sundays 12-2pm on Southern FM 88.3FM or via podcast. We like to think of that we tackle the week's sporting topics from another angle. We have had great success promoting the radio through social media via @SportzfanRadio on Twitter, it has effectively become our talkback line. We have a few regular panelists who give their take on sports and some of our guests include John Rillie (NBL), Barry Michael (Boxing), Greg Baum (The Age), Tyron Willingham (Washington Huskies Football coach), Chris Pelchan (Hawthorn List Guru) and Jim Stynes (Melbourne FC President).
The media work is great fun but my IT skills were best put to use with our work with the Mountain West Conference. The sports fan analysis we performed of 3 MWC colleges - Wyoming, Airforce Academy & UNLV allowed the MWC gain a better understanding of thier growing (and at that stage new) fan base. Our study focused on the ability for sports teams to understand fan loyalty and how thier fans associate with sponsors through that loyalty. Full details from MWC study.
MWC Associate Commissioner for Marketing, Dan Butterly, said: "The key to growing the Mountain West Conference in the crowded sports marketing arena is by increasing our knowledge base and gaining a better understanding of our fans and their needs. The results of the research highlighted the differences between how fans support each institution, notwithstanding that they are in the same Conference. Aside from the obvious benefits of the research, it allows the MWC and the institutions that participated in the project to identify potential new sponsors and provide new sources of revenue."
Our other media work includes producing the first AFL club TV show for the Western Bulldogs - Bulldogs TV and a weekly panel NBL show - 3 Point Play.
Bulldogs TV was the first television show produced for an AFL club - Western Bulldogs. It was hosted by Rob Gaylard, Bulldogs TV followed the progress of the club through the finals series. Bulldogs TV was used to assist in the marketing of the Club and membership drives. Guest included Wayne Jackson (AFL CEO), Caroline Wilson (The Age), Rick Kennedy (former Bulldogs captain) and well known Western Suburbs identity Phil Cleary
Three Point Play was an innovative free to air television show focused on basketball - NBL, NBA and the WNBL. Three Point Play was well received in the Melbourne community garnering audiences of 20,000 (which is impressive when you look at current OneHD numbers). Several NBL stars made regular appearances as panelists including Jason Smith, Mark Bradtke as well as media personalities Anthony Hudson and Clinton Grybas.
